Using a condom is an effective way to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy. Here are the steps to using a condom correctly:

  • Open the package carefully, being careful not to tear the condom. Do not use your teeth or scissors to open the package, as this can also damage the condom.
  • Pinch the tip of the condom between your thumb and forefinger to leave a half-inch space at the top. This will create a place for the semen to go after ejaculation.
  • Unroll the condom down the shaft of the erect penis, making sure it covers the entire penis.
  • Make sure to leave a little bit of extra space at the base of the penis to hold the condom in place during intercourse.
  • After ejaculation, hold the base of the condom while pulling out of the vagina or anus to prevent the condom from slipping off.
  • Discard the condom by wrapping it in a tissue and throwing it in the bin. Do not flush the condom down the toilet.

It is important to use a new condom every time you have sex.
